Lucknow beat Kolkata in a dominant manner in the 53rd match of the Indian T20 League 2022. A brilliant start with the bat, and an exceptional bowling display sealed the deal for the men in turquoise. Kolkata, on the other hand, never seemed like they had a chance. After being set an above-par target of 177, Lucknow defended the same with ease. Thus, they have now moved to the top of the points table.
Shreyas Iyer asked Lucknow to bat first at the MCA Stadium. Despite losing skipper KL Rahul (0) early on, Lucknow got off to a flying start, with Quinton de Kock and Deepak Hooda scoring quickly. Lucknow added 66 runs in the powerplay. Post which, De Kock raced to his half-century. However, Sunil Narine then grabbed the keeper-batter's wicket in the eighth over. At this time, Kolkata were 73/2, and De Kock had contributed 50 runs in 29 balls.
Hooda, joined by Krunal Pandya, built a short but important partnership. They added 34 runs for the third wicket partnership. After the wickets of Hooda (41) and Pandya (25), Lucknow did not have any significant performances from their batters. The 19th over, however, was a great one for them. Marcus Stoinis (28) and Jason Holder (13) collectively hit five sixes against Shivam Mavi. In the end, Lucknow scored 176/7 in the first innings.
Lucknow got off to a great start while defending the total. They took early wickets in quick succession, putting them in control of the match. The powerplay saw the wickets of Baba Indrajith (0), Shreyas Iyer (6), and Aaron Finch (14). Kolkata only managed 25 runs in the first six overs, losing three wickets along the way. Only Andre Russell had some impact in the innings as he sent a few shots over the boundary line. He scored 45 runs in 19 balls before being dismissed to Avesh Khan in the 13th over.
The men in purple were 85/6 in 12.2 overs. Post that, they were never settled in the game and kept losing wickets. Lucknow won the match in the 15th over as Kolkata were all out for 101. Jason Holder and Avesh Khan each got three wickets, with Mohsin Khan, Dushmantha Chameera, and Ravi Bishnoi taking one each.
