In the 59th match of the Indian T20 League 2022, Mumbai defeated Chennai by five wickets in a low-scoring affair. The bowling efforts of both teams were exceptional. This gave both sides an equal chance of winning the game. With this victory, Mumbai have effectively eliminated Chennai's prospects of making the playoffs.

Mumbai won the toss and decided to bowl first at the Wankhede Stadium. Chennai, however, did not have the start they were looking for. They lost Devon Conway (0) early on due to poor umpiring. Conway wanted to take the DRS, but he couldn't because of a power failure. After that, the men in yellow saw a downfall in their batting. No one except for MS Dhoni could do much throughout the innings.

Dhoni attempted to form a partnership, but wickets continued to fall at the other end. His 36 runs were the highest for any Chennai batter in the game. Mumbai's bowlers, on the other hand, were outstanding throughout the first innings. Early breakthroughs came from Daniel Sams and Jasprit Bumrah, with Riley Meredith and Kumar Kartikeya leading the assault in the middle overs. Sams took three wickets, Meredith and Kartikeya each took two. In the meanwhile, Bumrah and Ramandeep Singh each took one. Chennai's innings came to a premature end as they were bundled for a score of 97/10 in 16 overs.

As for the second innings, Mukesh Choudhary and Simirjeet Singh did not let the chase be easy for the Rohit Sharma-led side. They got early wickets in the game, which put pressure on Mumbai. Chennai's new-ball bowlers finished their four overs in the opening spell. The Mumbai-based franchise were reduced to 33/4 on a wicket that was not well equipped for the batters.

Hrithik Shokeen (34) and Tilak Varma formed a key alliance that helped Mumbai's innings. For the fifth-wicket partnership, the pair amassed 48 runs. After Shokeen (18) was dismissed in the 13th over, Tim David stepped in. Mumbai won the match when David (16) struck two sixes in the 15th over.
