In the 68th match of the Indian T20 League 2022, Rajasthan beat Chennai by five wickets. The bowlers of the Sanju Samson-led side did well to confine Chennai to a modest score. Although Rajasthan suffered a few hiccups during the game, they fought hard to officially qualify for the playoffs. In the process, they also secured a spot in the Qualifier 1 against Gujarat.
Chennai won the toss and decided to bat first at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Ruturaj Gaikwad (two) was gone early on, but Moeen Ali came in and played an explosive knock. The all-rounder was dealing with boundaries as he reached his half-century in the sixth over with a four. Chennai scored 75 runs in the powerplay.
After the first six overs, Chennai slowed down drastically. They also lost quick wickets in the middle overs as well. Conway (16), Narayan Jagadeesan (one), and Ambati Rayudu (three) all fell within 11 overs, giving the team a total of 95. MS Dhoni walked in next, and he was dropped twice early on. However, he could not make the most out of the chance as he struggled to get going. Ali also slowed down a lot. The duo added 51 runs in the partnership.
Yzvendra Chahal dismissed Dhoni (26) on the last delivery of the 19th over for a team score of 146. Obed McCoy claimed the wicket of Ali (93) and gave only four runs in the last over. Rajasthan was given a target of 151 runs. They too lost an early wicket in the chase. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson then helped to steady the innings. They added 51 runs in the partnership until Samson (15) was dismissed in the ninth over for a total of 67.
While Rajasthan lost another wicket, Jaiswal reached his half-century. However, he didn't last long after that, as he was dismissed in the 15th over. The equation was reduced to 47 runs in the final five overs. The following two overs provided 15 runs but led to Shimron Hetmyer's dismissal (six). Finally, Ravichandran Ashwin (40) and Riyan Parag (10) kept their calm and ensured that the Rajasthan-based franchise win the match. The Tamil Nadu player was superb in particular. Thus, the 2008-champions will now face Gujarat on April 24.
