In the 69th match of the Indian T20 League 2022, Mumbai defeated Delhi by five wickets. A solid bowling performance followed by a magnificent batting show enabled the five-time champions to a spectacular win. In what turned out to be an icing over the cake for them, Mumbai's victory knocked Delhi out of the top tournament. Thus, Bangalore are the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs.
Mumbai won the toss at the Wankhede Stadium and elected to bat first. The Delhi team had the worst possible start with the bat. They lost three wickets within the powerplay, and added just 37 runs. After that, they quickly lost another wicket. However, Rishabh Pant and Rovman Powell formed a solid partnership. The Windies batter was hitting the ball cleanly, but Pant was struggling to get going. He played a few false shots in his innings.
They added 75 runs, and were looking to take the attack to the opposition. However, Pant (39) sloppily lost his wicket to Ramandeep Singh in the 16th over for a team score of 125. Powell (43) blasted a few more strokes but couldn't retain the momentum for long. Bumrah bowled him in the 19th over. Delhi finished the innings with 159 runs. Bumrah had three wickets, Ramandeep had two, while Daniel Sams and Mayank Markande each had one.
After losing Rohit Sharma (two) in the powerplay, Mumbai got off to a slow start in the chase. During the first six overs, the Sharma-led side scored 27 runs. Ishan Kishan and Dewald Brevis took their time settling in before taking the aggressive route. In their partnership, they scored 51 runs. To break the partnership, Kuldeep Yadav took the wicket of Kishan (48) in the 12th over for a team total of 76. Brevis (37) was also sent back in the 15th over.
Mumbai now needed 59 runs in the last five overs. In the following three overs, Mumbai scored 45 runs. The game's momentum had entirely swung in Mumbai's favour. Tilak Varma and Tim David had changed the entire complexion of the match. Post the 26-year-old's dismissal in the 18th over, Tilak was dismissed by Anrich Nortje in the 19th over after he allowed nine runs (21). Mumbai then required five runs in the last over. Finally, Ramandeep smashed the winning runs on a free-hit, and hit a four. Hence, he ensured that his team end their campaign on a high note.
