Gujarat witnessed a great debut season as they went on to win the Indian T20 League 2022. The team captained by Hardik Pandya beat Rajasthan by seven wickets in the final at their home ground, i.e. the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Notably, this was the first time they played in front of their home crowd. The team performed admirably throughout the season, which always kept them in contention to win the title. Here are the reasons why Gujarat won the title.

Hardik Pandya’s all-round performance

Hardik Pandya had established a reputation of being a power hitter ahead of the recent season. However, after he was appointed as Gujarat’s captain, he took the position seriously. He played his game in a mature manner and took responsibility with the bat and ball. He was the team’s highest run-scorer of the season. Not many expected him to be the captain that he proved to be. His abilities and patience as a captain were widely discussed following the season.

Overall team effort

Throughout the season, most of the team members played a key role at different stages of the tournament. They overcame the limitations in their squad, as they were specific roles. Apart from Hardik Pandya, the team’s selections were David Miller and Mohammad Shami. Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan, Wriddhiman Saha, and Lockie Ferguson, among others, all produced match-winning efforts this season. Even young players had a great season this time around.

Great atmosphere from the management

On numerous occasions, the team players went on record to speak about how the management made it very easy for the players. Head coach Ashish Nehra and mentor Gary Kiersten always kept things easy which may have positively affected the team members. Pandya was frequently spotted spending time with Nehra. The former Indian player is known to have a great cricket brain. He was a great addition to the new franchise, and was just the person they needed in order to have a great time in the tournament.
