Deepak Chahar is certain to miss the first few games for Chennai in the upcoming season of the Indian T20 League. Chahar had suffered a right quadriceps injury during a T20I against the West Indies last month. Since then, he has been recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The right-arm medium pacer missed the three-match T20I series last month against Sri Lanka.

The Agra-born player was bought by Chennai at a mind-boggling price of INR 14 crores during the mega auction last month. Entered at the base price of INR 2 crore, teams such as Delhi, Hyderabad, and Rajasthan in the services of the bowling all-rounder. Notably, the 63 players hav been part of the Chennai setup since 2018. Last year, he was released as the teams were allowed to retain a maximum of only four players.

In his four-year ITL career, he has 59 scalps at an average of 29.18 and an economy rate of 7.80 with the best bowling figures of 4/13. He is a handy batter down the order with a strike rate of 138.59. Meanwhile, former India Test opener Wasim Jaffer believed that the skipper of Chennai, MS Dhoni will give the confidence to a youngster in the absence of the million dollar player. Jaffer named the players, who can play the role of a strike bowler with the new ball, a responsibility generally fulfilled by Chahar.

"We could see MS Dhoni giving confidence to the younger guys, the uncapped guys whether it's Tushar Deshpande, Simarjeet Singh who bowls for Delhi in the powerplay Mukesh Choudhary - he's a left-armer who bowls at decent speeds... The Mumbai wickets will need a little bit of pace so these guys can bowl," said Wasim Jaffer on ESPNcricinfo show RunOrder.
