Indian T20 League: Franchises reveal player retentions for 2022 season; Rashid, Morgan, Pandya among players released

November 30, 2021

The Indian T20 League franchises have released their retention lists. BCCI had given the November 30 deadline for the franchises to submit the list. The maximum number of players the franchise can retain was set at 4, with a maximum of two overseas players. Mumbai have backed their star players Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard. The likes of Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Trent Boult have been released.

Chennai have retained MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali. Names of Dhoni, Jadeja and Gaikwad are not surprising. However, Ali over Faf du Plessis have surprised a few.

Hyderabad have dropped David Warner and have backed Kane Williamson, Umran Malik and Abdul Samad. Malik and Samad showed a lot of promise in the last season. While Malik can bowl at express pace, Samad had shown his hitting prowess.  Not much need to be said about Williamson, who was certain to be retained.

Punjab have retained Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh and have released KL Rahul. Rahul's omission is a surprise call but this could well be because of the fact that Rahul was interesting in playing for another franchise.

Bangalore have retained Virat Kohli, Glen Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj, while have released Yuzvendra Chahal and Devdutt Padikkal among the senior players.

Rajasthan have backed Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Buttler over Stokes and Archer have raised several eyebrows. However, it was not certain that the Englishmen will play the next season.

Delhi retained Prithvi Shaw, Rishabh Pant, Anrich Nortje and Axar Patel. Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan and Kagiso Rabada have been released.

Kolkata have retained Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy and Venkatesh Iyer. Interestingly, Morgan has been let go of.
