The 15 edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) is going on from 11 October 2022. Ahead of the next edition of the Indian T20 League, will be a chance for the franchises to see new and exciting talents. However, fans were waiting for this tournament as the Indian Board announced introducing an 'Impact Player' or a substitute player option.
As per previous reports, they are going to use this option in the upcoming edition of the Indian T20 League. So, this SMAT will be a great platform for dress rehearsal. However, franchises did not get disappointed as they had the first look at that option, courtesy of Delhi. Delhi became the first team to use the ‘Impact Player’ option in cricket.
Indian T20 League franchises will look to use this option depending on the context of their match situations
Speaking of this new strategy, this will be a tactical substitute. Before a match, each team needs to name its four subs. One substitution per game can happen before the end of the 14th over. It can happen in either innings or between innings also. Delhi replaced Hiten Dalal with Hrithik Shokeen during their clash with Manipur in Jaipur.
Speaking of their performance, Delhi opener Hiten Dalal scored 47 runs off 27 balls. He hit seven fours and one six. In his place, Hrithik Shokeen came into action. He took two wickets for 13 runs in three overs. Delhi managed to win the match by a huge margin of 71 runs. Along with Delhi, Mumbai also opted for this new strategy against Mizoram.
Mumbai replaced Dhawal Kulkarni with Sairaj Patil against Mizoram. However, they also grabbed a huge win in the match by nine wickets. Regarding this new ‘Impact Player’ rule, the official circular read: “The player who is replaced by an Impact Player can no longer take part in the remainder of the match and is also not permitted to return as a substitute fielder. If a player gets injured while fielding in mid-over, the current playing condition prevails under 24.1 – substitute fielders.”
