Chennai registered their first win of the season by beating Bangalore by 23 runs on Tuesday at DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. Bangalore sent Chennai to bat first after winning the toss. The Men In Yellow did not have the best of starts as they lost Ruturaj Gaikwad early on. Josh Hazlewood made the early breakthrough in the 4th over. Chennai could only add 35 runs in the powerplay, losing one wicket. Shortly after, Moeen Ali was run out following a  confusion with Robin Uthappa in the 7th over. Shivam Dube then got a promotion over Ambati Rayudu to bat with Uthappa and that decision worked wonders for Chennai.

He started the job without wasting any time, while Uthappa played with caution for some time. The latter then started to shift gears from the 13th over onwards. He reached his half-century with a four in the 15th over, Dube also struck a boundary to reach his fifty in the same over. The two put on an exhibition of sixes and added 165 runs for the 3rd wicket partnership before Uthappa fell to Wanindu Hasranga in the 19th over. He scored 88 runs in 50 balls, hitting four fours and nine sixes. Hasaranga then accounted for the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja on the next ball.

Dube then took the strike in the final over and struck two more sixes against Hazlewood. He was dropped on the last ball of the game, and Chennai, eventually, managed 216 runs on the board. Dube remained not out on 95, including five fours and eight sixes.

Chennai started with Ali in the first over of the second innings and, in fact, used just one seamer in the powerplay. This tactic worked well for them. Maheesh Theekshan got two wickets in the powerplay and Mukesh Choudhary got one. Faf du Plessis (8 runs in 9 balls), Anuj Rawat (12 runs in 16 balls), and Virat Kohli (1 run in 3 balls) all departed early to leave Bangalore in trouble at 42 for 3 in six overs. Problems continued for Bangalore as Glenn Maxwell, too, fell in the 7th over off Jadeja. He added 26 runs in 11 balls, with Bangalore reeling at 50 for 4.

Shahbaz Ahmed and Suyash Prabhudesai, on his debut, added crucial 60 runs, before Prabhudesai (34 runs in 18 balls) fell to Theekshana in the 13th over. Ahmed also fell to Theekshana in the 15th over. He added 41 runs in 27 balls. This was Theekshana's fourth wicket in the game. Jadeja then cleaned up Hasaranga and Akash Deep in the 16th over for the score of 146.

Dinesh Karthik played his heart out, towards the end, but could not take the team home. He scored 34 runs in 14 balls in his cameo, including two fours and three sixes. Dwayne Bravo got his wicket in the 18th over for the score of 171 and Bangalore, eventually, fell 23 runs short of the target.
