Gujarat defeated Rajasthan by seven wickets in the first Indian T20 League 2022 qualifier. Gujarat was asked to chase a hefty target of 189 as Rajasthan were fantastic with the bat in the first innings. To win the game, Gujarat batters played wisely. The Hardik Pandya-led side secured a spot in the finals, while Rajasthan have to now play the second Qualifier.
At the Eden Gardens, Gujarat won the toss and elected to bowl first. Rajasthan lost an early wicket while batting first, but Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler performed admirably well for the team. Buttler was trying to get his innings going as Samson was on the attack. They added 68 runs in the partnership, with the skipper scoring 47 of those. Sai Kishore got Samson's wicket in the 10th over for a team score of 79. Devdutt Padikkal then chipped in for quick 28 runs to keep the run rate high.
Meanwhile, Buttler had been fortunate throughout his innings, and had found his groove. He rushed to his half-century and accelerated things. In 56 balls, he scored 89 runs. With his contribution, Rajasthan scored 188/6 batting first. Gujarat, too, lost an early wicket, but got off to a fast start in the chase. Shubman Gill (35) and Matthew Wade (35) kept the pace up, scoring 64 runs in the powerplay.
However, by the 10th over, both were dismissed for a team total of 85 runs. Hardik Pandya and David Miller fought hard during the second innings as they created an important partnership. They maintained the run rate, and the equation came down to 43 runs in the final four overs. The duo then scored 20 runs in the next two overs. In the 19th over, Obed McCoy bowled brilliantly, conceding only seven runs. Gujarat required 16 runs in the last over. Miller kept his nerve and showed why he is rated so highly. He hit three sixes in three balls to pull the team through.
Pandya and Miller scored 104 runs in the partnership, with the latter scoring a half-century. He scored 68 runs in 38 balls, with three boundaries and five sixes, while Pandya scored 40 runs in 27 balls.
