In what came as a shock to everyone, Suresh Raina was unsold in the Indian T20 League mega auction. Raina had a long-term association with the Chennai franchise until 2021. He was part of the team for all the seasons that they played in the tournament. However, poor outings in the last two seasons meant that Chennai released Raina ahead of the mega auction. The veteran could not find a buyer in the mega auction as well.

Meanwhile, Raina out of nowhere started trending on social media. Notably, Gujarat batter Jason Roy pulled out of the Indian T20 League citing bio-bubble fatigue. The news sent Twitter into a frenzy as they believed that Suresh Raina could be an apt replacement for the Gujarat franchise.

Raina is one of the most experienced campaigners in the Indian T20 League and has over 5500 runs in the 205 matches that he has played. He also has a century and 39 half-centuries to his credit.
The 35-year old was the captain of the Gujarat team when they participated in the Indian T20 League in the absence of Chennai and Rajasthan in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
