March 28 marked the debut of the much-awaited teams of the Indian T20 League, Gujarat and Lucknow. Both teams locked horns at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Gujarat skipper won the toss and invited Lucknow to bat first. Pacer Mohammed Shami breathed fire from the word go.

He accounted for the opposition skipper KL Rahul on the first ball of the game. The right-arm pacer didn't stop here. The Amroha-born pacer took out the likes of Quinton de Kock (7) and Manish Pandey (6). His new-ball bowling partner Varun Aaron also cranked up the high pace and accounted for Evin Lewis (10) with a sharp bouncer just outside the off stump.

At 29/4, the Men In Mint Green looked like they will be restricted to a low total. However, the partnership of 87 runs between Deepak Hooda (55) and Ayush Badoni (54) took the team to a respectable total of 158/6. Badoni showed great skill with the bat against some high-class bowling from Shami, Aaron, Rashid Khan, and Lockie Ferguson. In reply, Gujarat lost two early wickets to Dushmantha Chameera.

Chameera, who looked like repeating the heroics of Shami, accounted for Shubhman Gill (0) and Vijay Shankar in the powerplay. At 15/2, Hardik Pandya (33) and Matthew Wade (30) stitched a partnership of 57 runs before the former was accounted by his elder brother Krunal. Wade followed in the next over as he was clean bowled by Deepak Hooda.

At 78/6, David Miller (30) and Rahul Tewatia weren't ready to give up as they stitched the partnership of 60 runs for the fifth wicket. Miller got out to a juggling catch taken by Rahul. Tewatia (40*) and Abhinav Manohar (15*) ensured that the team reached the target with two balls to spare and five wickets in hand.
