The Indian women cricketers are yet to receive their share from the USD 500,000 prize money for ICC T20 World Cup 2020. According to reports, they are supposed to get it this week.

The decision to give the players their hard-earned money came after a report in UK’s Telegraph newspaper. It was reported that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to hand over the money. The money is supposed to be given to the players who took part in the T20 World Cup last year.

The Indian women’s team had finished as the runner-ups of the T20 World Cup. The event had taken place in Australia in February – March last year.

A senior BCCI official said in a statement that the Indian women’s team would get their prize money by the end of this week. The amount has been processed for payment and would be received by the players soon. He also commented on the delay in the payment. The official added that the BCCI received the payment late last year. It takes about two to three months to usually process the payment.

The payment got delayed due to the surge in COVID-19 as the BCCI office was shut

A former BCCI employee stated it is not just one payment for the women that got delayed. The central contract of the men’s team, international and domestic match fees, and everything else is taking time. It is because of India’s ongoing struggle with COVID-19. Even before the pandemic, the domestic seasons would get finished in March. The payment for those seasons would get completed only by September.

Thereby, in this case, it is important to check when the BCCI received the payments. If the BCCI received it just after the tournament, then it is definitely a delay. But the processing of payments definitely takes some time. The delay is for both the men’s and women’s cricket teams.

In the T20 World Cup last year, India was captained by Harmanpreet Kaur. After qualifying for the knockouts, India got lucky and got direct entry into the finals. It was because the Semi-final against England got washed out. India qualified for the Final as they had finished higher than England on the points table.

The Indian team lost the T20 World Cup Final to Australia by 85 runs.
