The recent second-string squad for the Zimbabwe tour might be the last experimentation from the Indian cricket board heading into the 20-20 World Cup. But before that, India will be playing the much-anticipated Asia Cup 2022 next month.
The squad for the same will be announced on August 8. It has been learned that the squad selected for the Asia Cup will be the same as the 20-20 World Cup in Australia in October this year.
However, the Asian tournament won't be the last assignment before the world event. The Men In Blue will play a bilateral series against Australia and South Africa before heading down under. Cricbuzz has reported that the selectors are keen to give enough games to the team before the showpiece event.
After all, it also needs to be noted that the World Cricket Governing Council have reportedly asked boards to name their tentative squads by mid-September. However, changes can be made in the squads before the tournament just like what happened last year. Talking about India, some of the players are missing because they are either on breaks or have health concerns. However, these players are expected to join the squad for the Asia Cup.
The players playing in the ongoing T20I series against the West Indies currently have the last chance to get selected for the world event. These players will be looking to put in match-winning performances in the series to become indispensable.
This year, the team management would be looking to build a strong squad and the selectors would be looking not to make the mistake they did in previous editions. Overall, India would get more than 10 games at least before the 20-20 World Cup which included Asia Cup, bilateral series against Australia and South Africa.
Currently, the Men in Blue are playing against West Indies in a five-match T20I series. Rohit Sharma and Co. have taken a 1-0 lead in the series. The two teams will lock horns in the second T20I on Monday.
