India's participation in the World Test Championship final in 2021 was not a sudden nor a dramatic occurrence. The shades of this were drawn towards the close of 2014, while Virat was briefly in command of the Indian Test squad in Adelaide due to MS's injury. It was the product of the effort that was put in over the previous six years or so.
The natural heir to India's most successful captain at the time would have been Virat, but no one knew that MS would announce his Test retirement midway through his tour of Australia in December 2014. India had been the No. 1 Test squad for five years in a row, from 2016 to 2021.
He was unshakeable in his belief: Mitchell Starc
R Sridhar, the fielding coach of India wrote in the Print about that iconic tour which made Virat Kohli the captain he was. He spoke about what Virat Kohli said and what his thought process was during that game. He said, “I have been going to Australia for a long time and I have seen how they play their cricket. If we go there and play cricket the same way as we have been earlier, there is not much we will bring back to India. We are not going to win Jack. For every step they take, we will have to take two steps forward. For every gaali they give, we will have to give three gaalis. For every bouncer they bowl, we will have to bowl three bouncers, not only on the field but even off it. The only way we can beat Australia is with aggression. I don’t want no timid guys taking that flight.”
Ravi Shastri also spoke about Virat Kohli and his stubbornness and determination to beat Australia and chase any target that is kept in front of them. He said, "Virat Kohli in the 2014 Adelaide Test in the dressing room told 'no matter what target Australia set, we're going to chase it down'. He was unshakeable in his belief, there was no question looking for a draw."
Fans react as Ravi Shastri recalls Virat Kohli's must-win attitude during 2014 Adelaide Test: -
