The Russia-Ukraine crisis has taken the world by storm. While a few countries have taken a diplomatic stand on the issue, most of the countries have condemned Russia's actions. Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, broke the peace accord as he sent the troops to invade Ukraine.

While the two countries find themselves amidst the chaos, the world has risen in protest of the war. The sporting community too has spoken up against Russia. The futures of some Russians, including Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and Haas F1 driver Nikita Mazepin have been put into the darkness of uncertainty. Football sponsorship relations with Russian companies have been discontinued as well. And now, International Judo Federation has sacked Vladimir Putin as their brand ambassador, and the position of Honorary President.

"In light of the ongoing war conflict in Ukraine, the International Judo Federation announces the suspension of Mr. Vladimir Putin’s status as Honorary President and Ambassador of the International Judo Federation," confirmed the federation in an official statement.

A highly accomplished judoka, Putin was awarded the eighth dan in 2014, which is considered one of the highest levels in sport. Since 2008, Putin is IJF's honorary president.

Earlier, the 2022 Judo Grand Slam was cancelled, which was supposed to be held in Kazan, Russia in May.

"We, the sports community, must remain united and strong, to support each other and our universal values, in order to always promote peace and friendship, harmony and unity," IJF said in an official statement.
