Punjab Kings defeated Rajasthan Royals by a narrow margin of 4 runs in the 4th match of IPL 2021. Batting first, Punjab put up a massive total of 221 on the board. RR looked set to chase the total, with RR captain Sanju Samson registering his 3rd IPL hundred. However, Arshdeep Singh’s crucial final over ensured that PBKS emerged victoriously.

That said, here are 3 reasons why PBKS managed to defeat RR in the 4th match of IPL 2021:

3. KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda dominated the RR bowlers

PBKS opener Mayank Agarwal was dismissed quite early in the match. Agarwal managed to score only 14 runs in 9 balls. Prior to that, KL Rahul and Chris Gayle notched a superb 67 run partnership. Gayle got out for 40 off 28 balls. After Deepak Hooda entered the crease, the 2 batsmen ran riot against RR’s bowlers. Hooda played an incredible knock of 64 off just 28 balls. His sublime innings included a total of 4 fours and 6 sixes. KL Rahul, notched a brilliant 91 off just 50 balls, as Punjab posted a humongous total of 221/6 in 20 overs.

2. Sanju Samson was all by himself

Sanju Samson was a one-man show against PBKS in the 4th match of IPL 2021. Facing 63 balls, Samson amassed 119 runs, bagging his 3rd IPL century. His innings featured a total of 12 fours and 7 sixes. RR could have won the match if Samson would have support from the middle order. IPL 2020 sensation Rahul Tewatia failed to make an impact on the match, scoring 2 runs off 4 balls. Samson tried his best to single-handedly win the game for Rajasthan, but it proved too much for the RR captain in the end.

1. Riley Meredith delivers in his IPL debut

Riley Meredith was smashed out of the park in his first 3 overs against RR. In 3 overs, Meredith leaked a total of 41 runs. However, Meredith made a spectacular comeback after conceding just 8 runs in the 19th over. Arshdeep Singh would have been under pressure if Meredith would concede more runs in his final over. Meredith scalped the crucial wicket of Rahul Tewatia, as RR needed 13 runs off the last over. In the end, Singh kept his cool and guided PBKS to their 1st victory in the IPL this year.
