The 2nd match of IPL 2021 saw IPL 2020 finalists Delhi Capitals emerge victorious over Chennai Super Kings. After posting a total of 188 on board, CSK looked to have the edge. However, the DC openers took CSK’s bowlers to the cleaners, and eventually Delhi won the match. That said, here are 3 turning points of the game between CSK and DC in IPL 2021:
3. CSK’s left handed batsmen exploited R Ashwin
After losing their openers early, CSK were down to 48-2 in 8 overs. With Moeen Ali and Suresh Raina in the crease, R Ashwin was handed the ball by DC captain Rishabh Pant. However, the plan backfired. The duo of Ali and Raina took Ashwin to the cleaners. Moeen Ali smashed 2 sixes off Ashwin’s over which was the 9th over of CSK’s innings. Prior to Moeen Ali’s dismissal, Raina also sent the ball out of the park in the same over. Ashwin was DC’s most expensive bowler, conceding 47 runs in 4 overs.
2. Sam Curran outshone his brother Tom Curran
With MS Dhoni dismissed for a duck, it was upto the duo of Sam Curran and Ravindra Jadeja to finish strong. In a brother battle between Sam Curran and Tom Curran, the former clearly exploited the latter. Sam and Jadeja smacked 23 runs off the final over of Tom Curran. Tom’s bowling figures plummeted from 3-0-17-1 to 4-0-40-1. Sam Curran’s impressive cameo of 34 runs helped post a fighting total of 188 on the board.
1. DC’s openers set the stage on fire
It can be said that the duo of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw completely swayed the match in DC’s favour. After 24-0 in 3 overs, Dhawan started firing from the bat. Dhawan targeted CSK bowler Sam Curran, who was smashed for 17 runs in his 2nd over. However, Shardul Thakur turned out to be CSK’s worst bowler in that match. In 3.4 overs, Shardul Thakur leaked a total of 53 runs, picking 2 wickets in total. Shikhar Dhawan was awarded the Man of the Match, for his scintillating knock of 85. Shaw got out in the 13th over, while Dhawan ran out of luck in the 16th over. However, the damage was done. DC needed only 22 runs off 20 balls as Rishabh Pant finished things off for Delhi.
