IPL 2021: Delhi Capitals spinner Axar Patel tests positive for COVID-19

Delhi Capitals have suffered another massive blow as their all-rounder Axar Patel has tested positive for COVID-19. Axar Patel is now the second cricketer after KKR's Nitish Rana tested positive for the dreadful virus. However, Nitish Rana has returned to the team after testing negative. The all-rounder has now been put in isolation according to the regulations set by the BCCI. Axar Patel was in mandatory quarantine before being tested positive and will now have to isolate himself for ten more days. As per BCCI's COVID guidelines for IPL 2021, the concerned person must isolate himself in the designated area outside the bio-secure environment for at least ten days.

Delhi Capitals is going to face Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 10. The stadium is, in fact, set to host 10 IPL games in the upcoming season. According to the latest report in ESPNCricinfo, BCCI is closely supervising the fresh COVID-19 spike in Mumbai and has kept Hyderabad as part of their contingency plans.

Axar Patel made a remarkable start to his cricket career against England

Mainly acknowledged for his limited-overs prowess, Axar Patel was included in the Indian cricket team for the four-match Test series against England. After missing the first Test due to injury, Axar made his Test debut in the second match. The 27-year-old ended the series with 27 wickets in three Tests. England's batsmen were completely bewildered against Axar Patel as he ended up bagging four five-wicket hauls in the series. The English batsmen were astonished by his accuracy and were unable to read his arm ball. With 27 scalps in three Tests, Patel broke the record for most wickets by a debutant in a Test series. He surpassed Sri Lanka's Ajantha Mendis, who picked up 26 wickets in his debut. 

Axar Patel joined Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2019 auction for INR 5 crore. Since then, the youngster has fixed his spot in the team, playing 14 matches in 2019 and 15 in 2020. In IPL 2020, the left-arm spinner scalped nine wickets in 15 games. Overall, Axar Patel has featured in 97 IPL games, including 80 wickets at an economy rate of 7.29.
