West Indies and Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Jason Holder has arrived in Chennai ahead of IPL 2021 season. The Barbadian cricketer will undergo a mandatory 7-day period of quarantine before joining the SRH team. Jason Holder was a part of the West Indies team's bio-secure environment in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka.
The all-rounder performed well with both the bat and the ball against Sri Lanka. He claimed three wickets each in the T20Is and ODIs and seven wickets in the game's purest format. Holder's arrival will be a boost for the Hyderabad-based franchise. They have an array of foreign cricketers to choose from, but Jason Holder had an exceptional season for the Sunrisers last time in UAE.
SRH to begin their IPL 14 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders
After going unsold in the 2019 auction, Holder was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad as a replacement for the injured batsman Mitchell Marsh. Soon after, the 29-year-old all-rounder made an impact and proved to the world why he deserved to be picked at the IPL auction. He reverted with an awe-inspiring performance with the ball, scalping 14 wickets in 7 games. Holder also played a crucial role in helping the franchise reach the playoffs. He made a few handy contributions with the willow, scoring 66 runs at an average of 33 and a strike rate close to 125.
However, the competition for the four overseas slots is more intense this IPL season. Australian batsman David Warner and Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan are certain in the Playing XI. That leaves two more overseas openings for which six cricketers will be competing. The Hyderabad-based franchise has some exceptional options, such as Mohammad Nabi, Jonny Bairstow, Kane Williamson, Jason Roy, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Jason Holder. This makes the selection for the playing XI quite tricky for the SRH management, considering the team has several woes with its middle-order. Sunrisers Hyderabad will play five of their IPL games in Chennai this year. They will begin their IPL campaign with a game against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 11.
