The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 will be a 10-team event. The bidding for the two new franchises was held today in Dubai. After some intense bidding war, CVC Capital and RPSG Group won the biddings for Ahmedabad and Lucknow for INR 7090 crores and 5000 crores respectively.
“A lot of planning and calculation has gone into our bidding. I give credit to personal staff for winning the bid,” RPSG group owner Sanjeev Goenka, who had previously owned Rising Pune Supergiants, who played two seasons of IPL said to Cricbuzz.
At least 10 high profile bidders, including Adani Group, Glazer family, owners of Manchester United and star couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone entered the bid but none could match the bids of CVC Capitals and RPSG Group.
Both Lucknow and Ahmedabad have world-class stadiums. While Lucknow has Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium, which can accommodate 50,000 people, Ahmedabad has the world largest stadium - the Narendra Modi Stadium, which can host 1,32000 spectators.
This is not the first time that IPL will be a 10-team event. Earlier before the fourth season of IPL in 2011, two new teams, Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala were added to the tournament. Kochi was terminated just after one season after breaching BCCI's terms and conditions, while Pune pulled out in 2013 owing to financial differences with the BCCI.
