CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has indicated that MS Dhoni will continue playing in the Indian Premier League. MS Dhoni announced his retirement from the international format in August last year. He was also anticipated to hang his boots from IPL at the end of the previous season in UAE, but a firm "definitely not" was his response when asked if IPL 2020 was his last season. As he prepares to lead CSK once again this year, the CSK CEO has officially declared that Dhoni is likely to continue playing for the franchise after 2021. He also reckoned that the franchise is currently not looking at anyone as his successor as captain.
The wicketkeeper-batsman is one of the biggest names in the world of cricket despite retiring from international cricket. MS Dhoni's fan following in India is second to none as the Chennai supporters fondly call him "Thala". Dhoni has been leading the yellow army since the inception of IPL in the year 2008. The veteran was away from the team only in the 2016 and 2017 seasons when CSK was banned from the league for two years. The 39-year-old had led CSK to a memorable title triumph in 2018 when the franchise made a thumping comeback in the tournament.
Chennai Super Kings has played eight finals and won the title thrice
One of the most consistent sides in the history of the IPL, CSK endured their worst season last year as they failed to make it to the playoffs. Chennai Super Kings have made it to the playoffs in ten out of eleven seasons. The side has so far have played eight finals and won the title thrice. CSK completed IPL 2020 seventh as it was a disappointing campaign for the three-time champions. Dhoni & Co. will be looking to bounce back stronger this season and make it to the playoffs once again.
MS Dhoni's form will be important for the team's chances. On the other hand, the return of Suresh Raina and the addition of new players Moeen Ali and K Gowtham will also add firepower to their batting line-up. Chennai will open their IPL 2021 campaign against last year's finalists, Delhi Capitals, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday (April 10).
