The IPL 2021 opening game between MI and RCB turned out to be a special one for spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. The 30-year-old accomplished a remarkable century and double century on Friday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The IPL 2021 opening match was Chahal's 100th game in the Indian Premier League. It was is also Chahal's 200th T20 match.
The leg-spinner has been one of the most consistent performers in the Indian Premier League. Chahal was one of the main reasons behind RCB making it to the play-offs of last year in UAE. The spinner claimed 21 wickets in 15 matches at an average of 19.28 and an economy rate of 7.08. Virat Kohli would be hoping Chahal to do something similar for the franchise this time around as well.
RCB won their first-ever IPL tournament opener
After an impressive bowling performance in their IPL 2021 opener against MI, RCB got off to a quick start. Captain Virat Kohli looked in great touch in the Bengaluru-based side's chase of 160. Earlier in the evening, it was fast bowler Harshal Patel who picked up his maiden IPL fifer to bundle out Mumbai Indians despite Chris Lynn's fantastic performance. With regular opening batsman Devdutt Padikkal missing out on RCB's first game of IPL 2021, the left-handed all-rounder Washington Sundar was sent in to open the innings with Virat Kohli.
A last-ball thriller saw the Bangalore-based franchise edge past the Mumbai Indians by two wickets in the opening game. Mumbai Indians scored 159/9 on the back of cameos from Chris Lynn, Suryakumar Yadav, and Ishan Kishan. The defending champions were dismantled by the first-ever 5-wicket haul taken against them by Harshal Patel. In response, Royal Challengers Bangalore experienced a few difficulties, but they got over the line off the last ball of their innings. RCB's new recruits performed brilliantly in the IPL 2021 season opener. This was precisely what the franchise needed, and they should now ensure that this momentum isn't lost at any point during the league phase.
