Indian Premier League 2023 is underway and 18 matches have been played in the tournament so far. The fans of this amazing cash-rich franchise T20 tournament have witnessed some exciting and nail-biting last-ball thrillers. It also includes some outstanding batting and bowling performances in the tournament.
But there are still some performances that have not gone well with the bowlers and batters in the tournament. Here, we’ll give a glimpse back into the history of the Indian Premier League. With said that, let’s have a look at the five bowlers with the most expensive spells in the history of the tournament so far.
Basil Thampi
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore were locking horns with each other during a match of the Indian Premier League 2018. Both teams were playing this match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This match came as a nightmare for SRH bowler Basil Thampi.
Thami went on to concede a mammoth number of 70 runs in his quota of four overs with a very miserable economy rate of 17.00 runs per over. It is still the most expensive over in the history of the Indian Premier League so far since 2008 till now.
Ishant Sharma
The veteran Indian bowler was a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp during the sixth season of the tournament in IPL 2013. The orange outfits were locking horns against MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings in the league match of the tournament at their home ground in Hyderabad.
Coming back to Ishant Sharma, he conceded a huge spell of 66 runs in his quota of four overs with an unbelievable economy rate of 16.50 runs per over. Sharma ranks second in this list of most expensive overs in the 15-year-long story of the Indian Premier League.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman
Afghanistan bowler Mujeeb Ur Rahman was playing for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) during the 12th season of the tournament in IPL 2019. In a match of the tournament, Kings were locking horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the match where things went completely south with Mujeeb as nothing went in his favour.
He bowled a spell of four overs and conceded 66 runs with a fearsome economy rate of 16.50 runs per over. Notably, Rahman is in the third spot just after Ishant Sharma in the list of most unimaginative, unexpected, and expensive four overs in IPL from the inaugural season till now.
Umesh Yadav
The veteran Nagpur-born pacer is currently in action with Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League 2023. Earlier, he had also appeared for the other franchises in the tournament. The instance we’re referring to is from the sixth season of the Indian Premier League in 2013 when he was playing for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Umesh has completely a off day with the bowl and had a tough outing by conceding 65 runs in his spell of four overs with an economy of 16.25 runs per over. The senior pacer is still on the list of highest-conceded overs in the entire journey of the Indian Premier League from the inaugural season in 2008.
Sandeep Sharma
The Punjab-born pacer was earlier a part of his home team Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) during Indian Premier League 2014. Sandeep Sharma was playing for the Kings in a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. In most instances, Sandeep is known for his amazing and experienced bowling but it was not his day against the Sunrisers.
Sharma went on to concede 65 runs in four overs to scalp only one wicket with an economy rate of 16.25. He is currently at the fifth spot in the list of most expensive spells in the Indian Premier League.
