The Indian Premier League has emerged as the world’s one of the highest-earning and most cash-rich franchise tournaments so far. The Indian franchise tournament has achieved new heights in its period of 15 years since its inception in the year 2008. It has given a boost to the cricketing career of numerous players in international cricket.
The tournament has witnessed a lot of premium batters and bowlers in its history of 15 years and 16 seasons (including ongoing IPL 20230 so far. There have been a couple of bowlers and batters who have almost reached legendary status in the League.
With said that, here we’ll have a look at the three batters with the highest number of sixes to their name in the history of the Indian Premier League.
Chris Gayle
The former legendary Caribbean batter Chris Gayle played 142 matches in his IPL career. In the 141 innings, he scored 4965 runs with an average of 39.72 with six centuries and 31 half-centuries with the wood. He also had the highest score of unbeaten 175 runs/
Talking about the sixes smashed by Gayle in IPL, he smashed 357 sixes before hanging his boots from all forms of cricket. It is still the highest number of sixes smashed by any batter in the history of the Indian Premier League. Notably, Gayle had appeared for various teams including Punjab Kings (former Kings XI Punjab), Kolkata Knight Riders, and Royal Challengers Bangalore)
AB de Villiers
The former South African skipper and blistering 360-degree batter AB de Villiers earned a one of its own kind of stature in the Indian Premier League with his amazing cricketing excellence. He appeared to bat in 170 innings of 184 matches in the 13-year-long IPL career from 2008 to 2021 playing for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and then Royal Challengers Bangalore.
In these appearances, ABD smashed 251 sixes and ranks second in the list of batters having the highest number of sixes in the history of the tournament. Apart from this, he is also one of the few batters in the league who scored 5000+ runs with 5161 runs having an average of 39.70 including three centuries and 40 half-centuries on his credit.
Rohit Sharma
Current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is the only player in the history of the Indian Premier League to be a part of the champion team six times; it included one title with Hyderabad Deccan Chargers and then five trophies with Mumbai Indians as skipper. He is also the only skipper in IPL to win five titles for his team.
Apart from this, the hitman has smashed 241 sixes in 224 innings of the 229 matches he played in his IPL career so far from 2008 till now. He ranks third in the list and is just 11 sixes behind surpassing AB de Villiers to gain the second spot in this list of highest six-getters.
