Between 2024 and 2025, a three-way barter of major events is most likely in the works. Apex Cricket Council rumour has it that the West Indies and the United States may receive compensation in the form of another major tournament in the future in exchange for giving up hosting the 2024 20-20 World Cup.
The West Indies and the United States may receive the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan as payment for forfeiting the 2024 20-20 World Cup, and in exchange, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may receive monetary compensation for the loss.
It is acknowledged that at this time, the Apex body, the various cricket bodies, and other stakeholders are only verbally discussing this. Additionally, it has come to light that the suggested concept has the support of the broadcasters for the upcoming media rights cycle.
2024 20-20 World Cup could take place in the UK
The United Kingdom is best suited to host a cricket tournament in June, the month in which the event has been scheduled, as reported by News18 CricketNext last week. England, the original hosts of 2030 20-20 World Cup, along with Scotland and Ireland, have also emerged as favourites to host the 2024 20-20 World Cup.
Further, the international cricketing organization is looking into a plan where the 2025 Champions Trophy, which is being shifted out of Pakistan, might be hosted by the West Indies and the United States. This is a smaller tournament, puts the broadcaster at less risk financially, and will require less infrastructure to get started.
“The current infrastructure situation in the USA is not very encouraging. Even if they successfully host the upcoming Major League Cricket, hosting an event like the 20-20 World Cup is a different ball game altogether. Where will you host the matches when the venues aren’t ready? Also, a long tournament in the far west could be a loss-making proposition for the broadcasters in the sub-continent, where the returns are highest,” a source close to the developments revealed.
