The veteran Indian all-rounder and World number one Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin possesses the leadership skills that he has shown in several instances in domestic cricket while leading the various sides in domestic cricket. But he has always been underrated by the Indian management while considering him for the leadership role for the national side of India at the highest level of the game.
When the former Indian skipper Virat Kohli stepped down from the captaincy, there were a few options in the people’s minds including the likes of KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rishabh Pant but it was Rohit Sharma who made a cut to succeed Virat Kohli as the Test skipper of Team India.
But there were only a few people who surprisingly suggested the name of Ravichandran Ashwin for the role of captaincy owing to his brilliant mental toughness and leadership abilities. Meanwhile, Ashwin himself has talked about the captaincy role and he also lashed out at the people who tagged him as the ‘overthinker’.
“A lot of people marketed me and positioned me that I am an overthinker. A person who will get 15-20 matches on the go doesn’t have to be mentally overthinking. A person who knows that they will get only two games will be traumatized and will be overthinking because it’s my job. It’s my journey. So this is what suits me. If somebody is going to tell me, ‘You’re going to play 15 matches, you will be looked after, you will be this, you are responsible for players, you are in the leadership role, I won’t be overthinking. Why would I?" said Ashwin to the Indian Express.
Here's what Ravichandran Ashwin said further
"It was created to work against me, right? And as I said, there have been statements that people have made all along when leadership question has come my way, there have been people who have been out there telling, me my name is not the first name on the sheet when India tour abroad,” he added later.
