Opening batsman Rohit Sharma has returned to the squad and is expected to play the third Test encounter in Sydney. The batsman came to Australia earlier but was undergoing his mandatory quarantine period before joining the team. After the conclusion of IPL, Rohit did not fly to Australia with his teammates and went to NCA Bangalore to tackle his fitness issues. According to the reports, if he is now in the best of fitness and likely to feature in India’s next Test against the Kangaroos.
From the same perspective, former chief selector MSK Prasad believes that if Rohit’s place has to be formed in the playing XI, either Hanuma Vihari or Mayank Agarwal has to be left. After a brilliant batting performance by Shubman Gill in his debut at the opening position, the management won’t contest him for the forthcoming Test at Sydney.
In the same way, Mayank Agarwal can lose his opening spot for Rohit Sharma. However, it is still not sure if Rohit will ply his trade as an opener in Test. If the management were him to bat in the middle-order, the team would have to be drop Vihari. Rohit’s addition in the playing XI will be a big boost for the Indian team.
In 2019, Rohit Sharma batted at the middle-order before the Test series against South Africa at home. The batsman then replaced KL Rahul and opened in that Test series. Rohit scored massive runs when he opened the series of India. However, the right-handed batsman has never opened in the Test series in a foreign land. The upcoming match at Sydney will be his first away series as a Test opener.
It will be seen what the team management is expecting from Rohit Sharma: Prasad
Both Agarwal and Vihari have not been in great form in the last two Tests against Australia. No one can deny that Rohit can replace any one of them soon. Talking about Agarwal, he has only bagged 35 runs in the last two Tests. Whereas Vihari had scored 45 runs in both the innings. The men in blue have levelled the series 1-1 after a glorious show at Melbourne Cricket Ground. The visitors will face Tim Paine’s side in the third Test match in Sydney, which will begin on January 7, 2021.
