Team India began their cricketing action in 2023 at home against Sri Lanka. It was the first game of the three-match T20I series that took place at Wankhede, Mumbai. All senior players took a rest and in absence of Rohit, Hardik Pandya got the opportunity to lead the team. Many young players were given a chance in the final squad for this series.

Hence, fans were hoping to see some young players in action. But, fans were looking to see Sanju Samson in the playing XI. Sanju did not manage the squad for the 20-20 World Cup 2022 despite several reports. Then, he was a part of the team India squad in both the ODI and T20I series in New Zealand. But, he got to play only one ODI match where he scored 36 runs off 38 balls.  

Fans were not happy after Sanju Samson got out cheaply in the first T20I

Fans were not happy with the Indian Cricket Board as they gave so limited opportunities to the wicketkeeper batter. However, they were expecting to see him in both squads for the ODI and T20I series against the Lankans. But, selectors considered him for the T20I series, not the ODI series. Speaking of the match, Hardik Pandya came out for the toss but he lost it. Shanaka asked the Men in Blue to bat first. Pandya also confirmed that two debut caps were handed to Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi. 

But, fans went crazy after hearing that Sanju Samson made the cut for the final playing XI. For the home side, Ishan Kishan and debutant Shubman Gill came out to open. But, they lost two early wickets for just 38 runs. Then, Sanju Samson came out to bat. But, he disappointed fans once again as he got out for only five runs off six balls at a strike rate of 83.33. It was another golden opportunity for him that Samson wasted in his career. Fans were not happy with that performance and they shared their views on social media platforms. But, India managed to win the series opener by two runs over the visitors.
