India have been doing exceptionally well in the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022, and the team, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, is all set to play the semi-finals against England on November 10, Thursday.

Two batters have stood for the team so far in the tournament and Virat Kohli tops the list of highest run-getters in the showpiece event overall and for India with 246 runs to his name. Suryakumar Yadav, who scored an unbeaten 61 off 25 balls, remains the second-highest run-getter for the Men in Blue with 225 runs.

Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer, lauded Suryakumar for his exceptional innings against Zimbabwe on Sunday and said that the batter deserved to be adjourned the Player of the Tournament award. “He has scored above 200 runs with three half-centuries. For me, he is the Player of the Tournament already for the kind of impact he has had even if India do not go on to win the World Cup,” Gambhir said after India’s crushing win against Zimbabwe on Star Sports.

Gambhir, who backed the player for the award, ended up receiving a lot of trolls on social media and many fans claimed that the former Indian batter should have rather backed Indian superstar Kohli.

“We have spoken a lot about him. Players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul are very orthodox. Suryakumar is different. India haven’t had these kinds of players, especially batting at No.4,” Gambhir said further on Star Sports.

For the unversed, the Indian team clinched a crushing win against Zimbabwe after restricting them to just 115 runs when they were chasing a mighty target of 187. Commenting on his knock, Suryakumar said that he used to practice the shots in the nets and added that the atmosphere in the team was pretty comfortable.

“I think the plan was very clear when me and Hardik were batting together. He said we should take a positive route and we started hitting the ball and never stopped. I think the atmosphere in the team is really nice and so is the build-up towards the knockout, really looking forward to that game,” said Suryakumar in the post-match interview.
