Cricket fans across the globe received a shocking update from South African cricket on Tuesday, September 5, when their star batter Quinton de Kock confirmed his decision to draw the curtain on his ODI career. The 30-year-old is set to retire after the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be held in India from October 5 to November 19. De Kock's announcement comes shortly after Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced their 15-man squad for the premier 50-over tournament.
The veteran opener has played 140 ODIs for South Africa since his debut in 2013 and has scored 5966 runs at an average of 44.85 with 17 centuries and 29 fifties. De Kock will now focus on T20 internationals and T20 leagues around the world after the World Cup. He had announced a similar sudden retirement from Tests as well, in December 2021, citing, saying he wanted to "spend more time with his growing family".
“Quinton de Kock has been a really good servant to South African cricket. “He set the benchmark with his attacking batting style and was a key member of the squad for a number of years. We understand his decision to step back from ODI cricket and we want to thank him for his service over the years. We wish him well for the future but still look forward to seeing him represent the Proteas in T20I cricket," said CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe.
No Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs in SA's ODI World Cup squad

Veteran players like Kagiso Rabada, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje and David Miller are in the squad.
South Africa's 2023 World Cup squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Sisanda Magala, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Rassie van der Dussen.

He's just 30. One of the modern day greats, how can we forget his 3 back to back centuries against India.
