Australian white-ball captain Aaron Finch thinks they have been placed in a "tough" group for the T20 World Cup 2022. The ICC announced the schedule and groups for the upcoming tournament in Australia.
The defending champions are in Group 1 along with New Zealand, England and Afghanistan. The winner of Group A and the runner-up of Group B from the first round will join these teams.
In a release by Cricket Australia, Finch said, "Our planning was ultra-detailed last time, and knowing what the groups look like nine months out is really helpful because it can help your level of detail in that planning phase more and more.”
Speaking of the upcoming edition, he said, "It's a tough group though, and when you throw in qualifiers like the West Indies and Sri Lanka, you've got to play really well to get out of that group stage.”
Finch created history for Australia by leading them to their maiden T20 World Cup. Explaining about the victory, he said staying fresh for the matches was the key and that they got the balance right ahead of the tournament, with the right preparation and rest. All this was important to be mentally and physically fresh for the tournament, Finch stated.
In regards of preparation for the 2022 edition, he said, "In the lead-up, there will be enough cricket in the T20 space. A lot of the guys will be at IPL as well."
The super 12 stages of the T20 World Cup will begin on the 22nd of October. Australia will play the opening match against New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground, whereas the final will take place on the 13th of November at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
