The 42nd match of the Indian Premier League 2023 witnessed a run-fest between the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 30 as the home side chased a monumental total of 212 runs and won the match by 6 wickets.

Earlier, RR skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and decided to put runs on the scoreboard first and the decision proved right as the MI bowling unit was punished by opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler. Within the first seven overs, Jaiswal and Buttler combined for a remarkable 72-run opening stand. Although, Buttler (18), Samson (14), and Devdutt Padikkal (2) struggled to get going in the high-scoring contest.

But Jaiswal had other things on his mind as he launched an all-out assault on the MI bowlers and smashed a brilliant century. He scored 124 runs off just 62 deliveries which included 16 fours and 8 sixes. After smashing his first-ever century in his highly anticipated IPL career, the hometown hero also wrote his name in history. Leg spinner Piyush Chawla was the most economical bowler for MI as he conceded only 34 runs in his 4 overs quota and even picked up 2 wickets as well.

Brilliant batting display by Mumbai Indians

Chasing the target, skipper Rohit Sharma, who was also celebrating his 36th birthday, got out on just 3 runs in the 2nd over by Sandeep Sharma. MI looked forlorn in the first 10 overs of the innings, as they allowed Ashwin to bowl out a meagre spell. However, the turning point came when Suryakumar Yadav took on impact player Kuldeep Sen and smoked 20 off the over. However, he fell after a quick half-century, but nothing stopped MI as Tim David came out and played an unreal cameo - 45 off 14 balls, with five sixes and helped the team to win the match with 3 balls to spare.

Meanwhile, the 43rd match of the league will be between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). This season's first match between these two clubs ended in a thrilling last-ball conclusion at a packed M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru in which the KL Rahul-led side defeated RCB by just 1 wicket.
