Jaydev Unadkat too old to be picked for team India: BCCI selector

A BCCI selection committee member has opined that Jaydev Unadkat is too old to be picked for team India. The selector went on to add that the cricket board would instead invest in a young player who has 8-10 years of career ahead of him.

A BCCI selection committee member has opined that Jaydev Unadkat is too old to be picked for team India. The selector went on to add that the cricket board would instead invest in a young player who has 8-10 years of career ahead of him. Considering his performances in Ranji Trophy, Jaydev Unadkat has performed brilliantly. The left-arm pacer scalped 67 wickets in the 2019-20 season. This is by far the highest number of wickets by any bowler in the season. However, despite his heroics in the Ranji Trophy, Unadkat was not included in the Indian squad, which will soon leave for the UK. Jaydev Unadkat might be just 29-years-old, but as per the BCCI selector, he is too old to be picked for the senior Indian team.

Jaydev was the highest wicket-taker in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy with 67 wickets

The left-arm pacer recently stated that he was waiting for his selection in India's 20-member team for the forthcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final in Southampton and the five-match Test series against England. Unadkat also highlighted that he is currently at the peak of his form and deserved a chance to be in India's squads for Australian and England tours. However, despite his brilliant performance in the domestic circuit, he was not included in the team for the upcoming series. 

Jaydev Unadkat was the premium bowler for Saurashtra in back-to-back Ranji seasons. In the 2018-19 edition, he picked up 39 wickets as Saurashtra lost against Vidarbha in the final. In the following season, he performed brilliantly took 67 wickets. The 29-year-old played a significant role in Saurashtra winning the title. Having made his international debut in a Test match against South Africa in 2010, the pacer has so far represented team India in 1 Test, 7 ODIs, and 10 T20Is.

For the upcoming England tour, team India has picked left-arm pacer Arzan Nagwaswalla as a backup player. Talking about Jaydev Unadkat, he is among the best bowlers in the Indian domestic circuit. The 29-year-old has 327 wickets from 89 top-of-the-line matches at 23.21. Unadkat has been brilliant with the white ball during the T20s. In that, he has scalped 182 wickets from 150 games. He has played four games for RR in the IPL 2021 last month. In that, the pacer picked up a three-for against Delhi Capitals, which also won him the Match award.
