Joe Root becomes seventh England batsman to reach 8000 runs in Tests

Joe Root registers a new record as he became the first England captain hit more than one double hundred in Test cricket. Root recorded his 4th double hundred and 2nd as a captain. The middle-order batsman has put his team in the driver's seat in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Joe Root registers a new record as he became the first England captain hit more than one double hundred in Test cricket. Root recorded his 4th double hundred and 2nd as a captain. The middle-order batsman has put his team in the driver's seat in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Root hit his first double hundred as captain in Hamilton against New Zealand in 2019. This was also his second double hundred against Sri Lanka after the Lord's special back in June 2014. Peter May, Graham Gooch, Alastair Cook, Will Hammond, David Gower, Ted Dexter, Leonard Hutton are the other England slippers to score double hundreds.

With this, he also becomes the seventh English batsman to score 8000 Test runs. The cricketer achieved the milestone in the first Test of the ongoing two-match series against Sri Lanka. He scored 8000 runs in 178 test innings.

Joe Root becomes the first England cricketer to hit two double hundreds as captain

Root now becomes the 2nd fastest England batsman to 8000 runs after Kevin Pietersen. Veteran England cricketer, Kevin Pietersen accomplished this feat in 176 innings. Former wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara holds the record for scoring 8000 Test runs in the least number of innings (152). However, the Indian captain Virat Kohli also has an opportunity of surpassing Sangakkara's record. Virat has scored 7318 Test runs in just 147 innings.

The England cricket team is leading against Sri Lanka by 276 runs on the first test's third day. Joe Root scored 228 runs in 321 deliveries. England has set a target of 421 runs for the hosts. In the first innings, the Sri Lankan team were all out for just 135. Prior the two-match series against Sri Lanka, the England skipper accepted that he had failed to score big hundreds in his Test career so far. Joe root believes he has not performed up to the mark, and he wanted to rectify that.

England is going to play against India home and away this year. The Ashes tour Down Under is also lined up for the English side. Joe Root will again have to play a big part if England wants to perform well in both the series. The 30-year-old has undoubtedly started 2021 on a good note with a double century against Sri Lanka.
