Legendary England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott opines that captain Joe Root has the potential to play 200 Test matches. Boycott further stated that Root could surpass Sachin Tendulkar as the highest run-getter in the game's most extended format. Root aggregated 426 runs in four innings against Sri Lanka at an average of 106.50 in the recently concluded Test series. The England cricket team won the series 2-0. With the victory, Root also became the fourth-highest run-getter in Test cricket for England. He also registered another record of becoming the first England captain to hit two double-centuries.

In the series against Sri Lanka, Joe Root surpassed the likes of Geoffrey Boycott (8113), Kevin Pietersen (8181), and David Gower (8231) to become the fourth-highest run-scorer for the side. The current Test captain, Joe Root is now behind former wicket-keeper Alex Stewart (8463), Graham Gooch (8900), and Sir Alastair Cook (12472) in regards of leading run-getters for England in the purest format of the game.

Joe Root can break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 15000 runs in Test: Geoffrey Boycott

Similarly, retired cricketer Geoffrey Boycott feels that the prolific English skipper has all the talent and abilities to surpass the record of Indian great Sachin Tendulkar in the most extended format of the game. He also opines that he can break Sachin's record of being the highest run-getter in the future. Boycott further mentioned that Root is only 30-year-old and has featured in only 99 Tests. In those 99 games, the batsman has gathered 8249 runs in his bag. If he continues with the same pace, he won't have any difficulties breaking Tendulkar's record of 15000 plus runs.

Additionally, the legendary English batsman highlighted that he would only compare Root with the same generation players like Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson, who all are excellent players. He also believes that the England skipper has done a lot of hard work on his batting during the lockdown. Thus, a player like him should be compared to his contemporary only and not the past era's cricketers. Boycott also stated that every cricketer is a product of their respective environment. Joe Root currently has aggregated 8249 Test runs in 99 matches at an average of 49.1. He has smashed 49 fifties and 19 centuries till date.
