The Ashes 2021-22 has turned out to be a nightmare for England as of now. Amidst all the hype, they were defeated rather easily in all three Tests. Thus, this has led to the team being severely criticized.

English skipper Joe Root in particular has gone on to be the scapegoat. Not only are his captaincy tactics questioned, but several cricket pundits have called for him to be axed as the captain. However, former Australian cricketer Greg Chappel thinks otherwise.

He feels that the domestic structure is to be blamed and not the leader. The 73-year-old felt that the ECB need to fix their loopholes in the system. Writing in his column for The Age, he said that blaming the 31-year-old isn't going to benefit them.

There is not much point blaming the hapless Joe Root: Greg Chappell

"There is not much point blaming the hapless Joe Root for all the ills of English cricket. His resignation or sacking will not make an iota of difference to the quality or quantum of players available or worthy of Test honors," said Greg Chappell. He even went on to openly call out the shortcoming of the English set-up.

Chappell was under the opinion that their fans deserved much more. While addressing their loopholes, he felt that the ECB need to take remedial measures. Thus, he felt that failure is not an option.

"The current English team is a result and reflection of the shortcomings of its system. The ECB has to acknowledge that and start remedial action. Failure is not an option. The country that invented cricket cannot languish anymore and be its widely scorned, perennial underperformers. The English public deserves much better of its cricket board," he said.
