Star Kiwi batter and skipper Kane Williamson is currently running out of cricket due to an injury. Amid the suspense over his participation in the upcoming ODI World Cup, New Zealand coach Grey Sted has expressed belief in his comeback. It's worth noting that Williamson has not been named in New Zealand's 15-member squad for the England tour.

However, it has been informed that he will travel with the team and practise and rehab in the United Kingdom. Notably, Williamson injured the ALC in his right knee during his Indian Premier League debut match against the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023. He was brought by the Gujarat Titans for INR 2 crore in a player auction.

Meanwhile, speaking about Williamson's comeback, the New Zealand coach expressed his optimism. He said, "We will take every measure we can to make sure that we get the medical advice that lines up and he's where we want to be before we make that call on whether he goes (to India for the World Cup) or not. It's too early to know."

He's progressed as we've hoped: says Gary Sted

Further speaking about his progress, Sted said that Williamson has responded as they had expected. "Kane's working very much on a day-by-day, week-by-week process, and we've been really clear and careful with him that we don't look too far ahead and, I guess, get expectations too big or not big enough at times as well. He's progressed as we've hoped and possibly even better in some cases, but you know with ACL injuries that they can be difficult and different for every person as well," he said.

Speaking about selecting Williamson for the latter stage of the tournament, Sted said, "That's something we are talking about at the moment. If it's the knockout stages, then I think that might be too late because you're saying something that may or may not even be there. But if it was earlier in the World Cup, I think we'd definitely be considering it."

In the 2019 Menโ€™s ODI World Cup, Williamson emerged as his team's leading run-scorer, amassing 578 runs at an impressive average of 82.57. His remarkable performance featured two centuries and an equal number of fifties. Additionally, he earned the accolade of Player of the Tournament, a recognition he received as New Zealand encountered an unforgettable final at Lord's.
