Indian cricket veteran Kapil Dev feels that India should try playing Hardik Pandya further up at the no 4 positions. Usually, Pandya bats a bit lower down the pecking order and plays the role of a finisher in the team. Pandya is the talk of the town after some fiery cameos and explosive batting against Australia in the limited-overs series.
Kapil Dev feels that the Indian management should experiment with some players playing at different positions than they usually do. Kapil Dev reckons that India should keep at least 2-3 explosive batsmen in the middle order. One way to do so would be by pushing up a batsman lower in the rank to bat up in the order.
Hardik Pandya was arguably India’s best player against Australia in the ODI series. In just 3 ODIs, Pandya amassed a total of 210 runs. In the 1st ODI against Australia, Pandya smacked 90 runs in just balls. His innings included a total of 7 fours and 4 sixes. However, his impressive knock of 90 was futile as Australia won the 1st ODI. In the final ODI against Australia, Pandya smashed 92 off just 76 balls. Eventually, India went on to win the final ODI. However, they ultimately lost the ODI series to Australia.
Hardik Pandya was also crucial for India in the T20I series against Australia. Pandya was the Man of the Match in the 2nd T20I against Australia. His quickfire 42 off 22 helped India chase a total of 194 with 2 balls left. India eventually went on to win the T20I series 2-1 against the Aussies away from home.
Kapil Dev believes that the Indian Team does not experiment enough
India is now preparing to fine-tune its team for the upcoming World Cups in 2021 and 2022. However, they still lack a robust starting XI. While the batting and bowling line-ups look strong, the middle order looks a little shaky at times.
The former Indian captain feels that the IPL has provided a platform for younger players to showcase their talent. However, he feels that the Indian Team Management has not utilized this opportunity to its full potential. The Indian team needs to strike the right balance between two sets of different players. One set comprises players such as Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson, who performed below expectations. The other set comprises players such as Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, who were outstanding in the IPL this year. With the first set of players failing to deliver, the management should give the second set of players a chance to show their worth.
