After an outstanding season in IPL 2020, KL Rahul has his eyes set on the upcoming world cup tournaments. KL Rahul was the Orange Cap winner in IPL 2020, smashing 670 runs in just 14 matches. He was also KXIP’s wicket-keeper for the entire season. Rahul has kept wickets for the Indian side in the past. He now seeks to continue the legacy left by former Indian skipper MS Dhoni.

Vying with KL Rahul for this position are Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson. Owing to Pant and Samson’s dismal performances in IPL 2020, the selectors have lost faith in the duo. They have now turned to KL Rahul to take up this responsibility. There is a myriad of advantages to picking Rahul over Pant and Samson. He is the best batsman in the lot, and the team gets to play an extra all-rounder or bowler as well.

"I am ready to take on the responsibility" - KL Rahul

Rahul has to fill the shoes of MS Dhoni, which is no less than a challenge. The former Indian captain was outstanding behind the stumps. With 123 stumpings in his ODI career, Dhoni is arguably the best wicket-keeper in ODI format history. Rahul understands what is required of him and also has nothing but praise for Dhoni. He firmly believes that Dhoni was in a different league and that no one can fill the void he left.

In order to cement his position, KL Rahul needs to understand the psychology of his fellow bowlers. Rahul is good friends with Chahal and Jadeja. He believes that there has to be an understanding of the bowler to wicket-keep effectively. Rahul has played a series against New Zealand as a wicketkeeper previously. The experience he gained will help him provide the correct feedback to the bowler. This, in turn, would help him understand what his position requires him to do.

Rahul has also been assigned the duty of vice-captain in the upcoming series against Australia. He feels that working alongside Kohli as his deputy would provide him the ultimate leadership experience. KL Rahul was also the captain of KXIP this season. Though the formats are entirely different, the experience is somewhat similar.

With such huge responsibility on KL Rahul’s shoulder, it might be difficult handling the team and the batting department initially. However, we do believe that Rahul will eventually cope up and try to fill the void that MS Dhoni left.
