Sourav Ganguly had already pointed out that Rishabh Pant’s miss in India’s Playing XI for World Test Championship (WTC) would be a big one. The current status of India in the ongoing one-off test is a further testament that Ganguly was right. India are struggling at 175-6 after 44 overs following a top-order collapse. In the middle order, Ajinkya Rahane is trying to steady up the ship while Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed towards the end of Day 2 for a well-made 48 off 51.

“Rishabh Pant is a massive loss. He is an out-and-out match-winner for India, and he will be badly missed. Having said that, I think KS Bharat will be playing in the final because this selection is indicative of Rahul Dravid’s mindset. I wish him well because his contribution will be important for India,” Ganguly said earlier.

Rishabh Pant has been India's top run-scorer in Tests since 2021

In the previous two years, Rishabh Pant had been India's finest batsman. Even though he missed the four Tests against Australia, Pant has been India's top run-scorer since 2021. Since Ishan Kishan is uncapped at the Test level and KS Bharat has so far appeared in 4 home Tests, Rishabh Pant's absence cannot be filled. Unfortunately, on his route to his hometown of Roorkee on December 30, Pant's car had hit with a divider and caught fire on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. Following the accident, he has been inactive in the cricketing scene.

Earlier Sourav Ganguly had said that Rishabh Pant must take his time to recover completely. "I am sure that the national team is missing him as well. He's young and he has got a lot of time left in his career. He's a special player and he must take his time to heal properly. We wish him all the best and I'll meet him as well. "I spoke to him a couple of times. Obviously, he is going through a tough period, through injuries and surgeries and I wish him well. In a year's time or may be in a couple of years' time, he will be back playing for India," Ganguly said.
