West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite has been named the full-time captain of the side in the game's longest format. The 28-year-old has now become the 37th Test skipper after replacing all-rounder Jason Holder in the role. Jason Holder, the world number one all-rounder in Test format, led the Caribbean side in 37 Tests. He took over the captaincy reins from Denesh Ramdin in 2015, leading the team to 11 wins, five draws, and 21 defeats.

At 23 years, 72 days, Holder became the youngest West Indian captain. On September 4, 2015, he was appointed as the captain of the Test team for the tour to Sri Lanka. He became the second-youngest test skipper of all time for the West Indies and the 15th youngest for any Test country.

Kraigg Brathwaite previously led the West Indies team seven times in the absence of Jason Holder. His first task in his new role will be a two-match home Test series against Sri Lanka. The first Test is likely to start on March 21, with West Indies set to declare their squad on March 12.

Brathwaite is the right man to lead our Test team at this point in time: Roger Harper

West Indies Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams applauded Jason Holder's leadership skills. Denying all the suggestions about Holder's Test career coming to an end, he backed the all-rounder to be an essential part of the West Indies team in the longest format for years to come. Jason Holder has featured in 45 Tests so far, scoring 2115 runs at an average of 32.05. On the bowling front, he has claimed 116 scalps at an average of 27.95.
Chief selector Roger Harper felt the series win in Bangladesh displayed Brathwaite's true potential as a captain. Brathwaite helped the side seal a historic series win in Bangladesh. The Caribbean team pulled off the highest chase in Asia in the first Test. They then concluded the match by 17 runs to complete a series sweep.

Brathwaite will now aim to help West Indies perform better in the next World Test Championship cycle. They finished sixth in the inaugural WTC, winning three Test matches in four series to finish with 160 points.
