In the third game of The Ashes 2023, England needed to win to keep the series alive. They were lagging behind by 0-2 after the first two Tests. In this game, the team made a few changes. They dropped the likes of James Anderson was dropped for Mark Wood. Apart from this, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes made a comeback in the team.

On the other hand, Australia only one change, a forced one rather. They brought in Todd Murphy for injured Nathan Lyon as the latter is ruled out of the series. Meanwhile, in the game, the home team won the toss and elected to bowl once again like they did at Lords. The Ben Stokes-led side had a great start as they took four wickets for 85. The likes of Mitchell Marsh (118) and Travis Head (39) took the team to 240/4.

However, the home team made a comeback and bowled out Australia for 263. Mark Wood took a fifer in his comeback game after December 2022. In reply, England was reduced to 131/6, staring down a massive lead by conceding. However, Ben Stokes (80) and a cameo from Mark Wood (24) helped the team reach 237, conceding only 26 runs.

In the second innings, England needed to keep Australia to a gettable score as the wicket was getting difficult to bat. Also, the home team hasn't been at their best in regards to Bazball against quality bowling. Meanwhile, with the ball, they managed to keep Australia to 224 all-out, despite Head's 77. With this, the home team needed 251 runs to keep the series alive.
