On 16 October 2022, Sri Lanka locked horns with Namibia in the first match of qualifiers for the 20-20 World Cup. All eyes were on the Sri Lankan players as they were coming off as the Asia Cup winners. They won the last five T20Is on a trot along with one warm-up match in Australia. On the other hand, Namibia also managed to win their warm-up match against Ireland.

However, during the 20-20 World Cup 2021, both teams met each other in the qualifiers. But, Sri Lanka won the match by seven wickets. So, fans were eagerly waiting for the kick-off of the World Cup with a good game of cricket. Speaking of the match, Dasun Shanaka won the toss and asked Namibia to bat first.

Namibia defeated Sri Lanka by 55 runs in the first match of the 20-20 World Cup

For Namibia, both openers departed within just three overs. After that, all batters chipped in with some vital contributions. Jan Frylinck scored 44 runs off 28 balls, including four boundaries. Along with him, JJ Smit remained not out on 31 runs off 16 balls, including two fours and two huge sixes. Finally, Namibia posted a competitive total of 163 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. For Sri Lanka, Pramod Madushan took two wickets for 37 runs in four overs.

In response, Sri Lankan batters came out for the chasing. But, they started to feel the heat as Namibian bowlers were in top form. No batters managed to contribute massively as they failed miserably. Only skipper Dasun Shanaka scored 29 runs off 23 balls, including two fours and one six. Sri Lanka got bundled out for just 108 runs in 19 overs. Four bowlers from Namibia took two wickets each as they managed to pull up an upset on the first day of the 20-20 World Cup 2022. With this massive win, Namibia will look to qualify for the “Super 12” stage for the second year running. On the other hand, the reigning Asia Cup champions will look for a turnaround quickly to keep alive their World Cup dreams.
