Lankan Premier League Player draft to be held on 5th July

The player selection draft for the upcoming season of the Lankan Premier League (LPL) is scheduled for the 5th of July.

The third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will begin on July 31st, with five teams competing for the prestigious trophy. Meanwhile, the player selection draft for the upcoming tournament is scheduled for the 5th of July. The upcoming draft will include 353 players, with 180 foreign and 173 Sri Lankan players (First Class, Internationals, and Ex-Internationals).

The virtual event will begin at 5 PM, with the participation of the LPL Governance Committee, and the Franchise Owners ( Management and Coaches). The draft will be divided into 20 rounds, with each round covering a different player category. Some of the categories are 'International Ruby,' 'International Sapphire,' 'International Diamond 'A,' 'B,' and 'International Platinum'.

A Sri Lanka 'Gold Round,' on the other hand, will focus on choosing Sri Lanka's young talent, under 23, with two players per squad. A squad of 20 players will be formed by each team, featuring 14 Sri Lankans and six internationals. If required, a team can retain six players from the previous year's squad, including four Sri Lankans and two overseas players.

Franchisees can also Direct Sign (Pre-Draft) two Sri Lankans and two internationals, while the remaining players must be selected via the upcoming player draft.

The 2022 season of the Lankan Premier League will begin on July 31st and will end on August 21st. Jaffna Kings, Kandy Warriors, Galle Gladiators, Dambulla Giants, and Colombo Stars are the five teams participating in the tournament. The tournament will be played across two venues, the MRICS in Hambantota and the RPICS in Colombo.

The Lanka Premier League is a professional cricket league in Sri Lanka played in the T20 format, with teams representing Sri Lankan cities competing each year since 2020. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) established the league in 2018. Ravin Wickramaratne, the Vice President of SLC, was formally selected as the tournament's director in August 2020.

To date, the LPL has had two editions, in 2020 and 2021, with Jaffna Kings prevailing as champions on both occasions.
