India is all set to take on Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series starting on the 4th of March. The first Test to be played in Mohali will also mark Rohit Sharma's first match as a Test captain. Rohit Sharma was appointed as India's white-ball captain ahead of the South Africa tour. However, he missed the series owing to injury. He took over the reins of team against West Indies and had a great start to his reign. He is now India's captain in all formats.
Today we will look at players who have captained India in all formats. Rohit Sharma will be the 5th player to achieve this feat. Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni, Ajinkya Rahane, and Virat Kohli are the previous players to get there.
Here is a list of India's captains in all three formats:
Name | Captaincy debut | Test matches as captain | ODI matches as captain | T20i matches as captain |
Virender Sehwag | 2003 | 4 | 12 | 1 |
MS Dhoni | 2007 | 60 | 200 | 72 |
Ajinkya Rahane | 2015 | 6 | 3 | 2 |
Virat Kohli | 2014 | 68 | 95 | 50 |
Rohit Sharma | 2017 | 0* | 13* | 26* |
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma was appointed as the T20 captain after Virat Kohli stepped down as the T20 captain. Later, in a controversial move, the BCCI sacked Kohli as the ODI captain, and Rohit was the obvious next choice. Virat then gave up the Test captaincy and the position was up for grabs for a while. There were other options for this spot as well, but the BCCI announced Rohit Sharma as the captain ahead of the series against Sri Lanka.
India is currently preparing for the Test matches against Sri Lanka beginning on the 4th of March at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. This will be their last assignment before the start of the start of the Indian T20 League.
