South Africa and Australia continued their ongoing multi-format series. Both sides will compete in the first ODI match against each other in five ODI matches series, with South Africa eager to improve on their results after losing the T20I series where they lost all three games. On the other hand, Australia were riding high on confidence with their T20I series win and aimed to put in a similar performance in the five-match ODI series to cap it off.

Citing this, the Australian team skipper Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to bowl first. The South African team did not have the best of the start with the wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock (11) falling off the bowling of Marcus Stoinis. The South African batting lineup showed poor execution with the bat as all the batters were dismissed one after another. But when the going got tough, the skipper Temba Bavuma held one end together and ensured that the host ended up with a fighting total on the scoreboard.

The South African skipper, looked equally comfortable against spin and swing at the same time and scored a gritty century against the mighty Australian bowling attack. The skipper Bavuma notched up a fighting century off 126 deliveries before running out of partners. The 33-year-old played a brilliant knock of 114 runs off 142 runs including 14 boundaries along with one massive six. The entire South African team were bundled out for 222 runs.

In the chase, Travis Head was Australia's standout performer, scoring 91 off 48 balls. Josh Inglis (42 off 22) made a significant impact, and Marcus Stoinis (37* off 21) guided Australia to a clean sweep of South Africa in their home series, securing victory with ease.
