Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja feels that R Ashwin has outshone Nathan Lyon in the 1st Test of the 2020 Border-Gavaskar trophy. The former Indian captain was of this opinion because he felt that Ashwin posed more of a threat than his Australian rival. Even Indian commentator Sanjay Manjrekar agreed with the former Indian captain.
Ajay Jadeja felt that Ashwin managed to neutralize the backbone of the Australian batting order. Lyon, on the other hand, could only pick up a solitary wicket in the 1st innings of the test. Jadeja also highlighted that Ashwin has always been a threat in the first part of an overseas Test series.
Lyon, in the 1st innings of the Test, picked up the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara. The Australian spinner bowled 21 overs in total, conceding 68 runs in total. Ashwin, on the other hand, had a brilliant outing against the Aussies in the 1st innings. In his spell of 18 overs, Ashwin picked up 4 wickets, conceding 55 runs in total.
R Ashwin should have bowled more overs: Sanjay Manjrekar
Manjrekar felt that the off-spinner should have bowled more overs than he was allowed to. He felt so because Ashwin was the best of the lot. You always want to back the most confident bowler by giving him more overs.
Lyon, who picked only 1 wicket against India bowled the same number of overs as his Australian counterparts. Furthermore, Manjrekar failed to understand why the likes of Shami and Yadav bowled more overs than the off-spinner.
Ashwin picked the crucial wicket of Steven Smith, who came into the Test as the no 1 ranked Test batsman. Moreover, he bagged Smith in his 1st over. Ashwin bowled a total of 18 overs, second only to MI bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
It could also have been that Kohli expected the seamers to deliver with the ball in the Day-Night encounter. Pace bowlers have enjoyed a fair amount of success when it comes to pink-ball matches.
Delighted to pick Smith’s wicket: R Ashwin
In a statement to the press, Ashwin stated that he was ecstatic to pick Smith’s wicket in the 1st over. Smith would have posed a lot of threat to the Indian team. With Smith neutralized, Ashwin stated that India had a chance to sway the game in their favor. Ashwin signed off by stating that he would continue to take his form in the second innings of the 1st Test.
