Shubman Gill, star Indian batter, is regarded as one of cricket's top players. The Punjabi right-handed batsman has now hit century for India in each game format. He joins Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli as India's fifth batters to reach the milestone.
Gill's journey has not been simple. His farmer father, Lakhwinder Singh, had dreams of playing cricket. Although Lakhwinder's dream was not realised, he did assist his son in succeeding. The Gill family left their ancestral hamlet and relocated to Mohali, where they rented a home close to the PCA Stadium.
In Gill's career, the 2018 U-19 World Cup marked a significant turning point. Gill was named Player of the Tournament and India took home the championship. He amassed 372 runs at a 124-batting average, helped by a century and three half-centuries. In an ODI match against New Zealand in 2019, Gill made his India debut. He recently won the orange cap in IPL 2023 for scoring 890 runs in the season. Now, he finds himself in the squad of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 playing against the Aussies at the Oval, London.
‘A fluent batter, India’s future’ – Rohit Sharma’s words of praise for Shubman Gill
Rohit Sharma in a statement to the Apex Cricket Council stated that he considers Shubman Gill to be the next big thing in Indian Cricket. He said, "Shubman Gill is the next big thing of Indian cricket". This is not the first time Rohit Sharma has opened up about his expectations from Shubman Gill. He was earlier quoted saying, “Shubhman Gill is a very fluent batsman. I think he is India’s future. I feel when he gets chances, if he scores runs, he will get that confidence. Now he doesn’t know when he’ll play. He’s done well in the domestic circuit, I think we should get him into the team.”
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020–21, Gill finally made his Test debut. Gill had his chance in the second Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground after Prithvi Shaw's poor show in Adelaide. In the first inning, he scored 35* (36) runs, and in the second, he scored 45 (65) runs. India levelled the series with a victory over England by eight wickets.
