Max Verstappen, who bagged pole position in the Dutch Grand Prix 2022, has urged the fans not to throw smoking flares on racing tracks. He was referring to the incident that happened, recently, when a spectator threw an Orange smoke flare. As a result, the fan was thrown out by security. The incident happened during Turns 12 and 13. Another incident like this happened during Turn 1 as well.
Now, Verstappen has opened up on the incident and started by saying that there is no harm in holding flares. However, he cautioned against throwing them on the tracks, especially during the race. The racer maintained that it is not good for the spectators to get involved in activities such as this as they might get kicked out.
"To hold flares, it’s nice but of course, there’s a limit to how much. But to throw it on the track is just stupid," Verstappen said. "Just don’t do that. It’s not good for anyone -- you get thrown out, so you can’t see the race, and for us, the session is stopped because it is dangerous, there’s stuff on the track, so you shouldn’t do it."
It can create unnecessary risk: Charles Leclerc
On the other hand, Charles Leclerc, who finished second in the event echoed Max's words. The former said that it was good to see the security acting immediately. Charles also questioned whether it can be prevented to happen in the future. He, further, added that activities like this can create unnecessary risk.
"It's dangerous, so don't do these type of things. It's good there was a reaction by the security guys and this shouldn't happen.
"I don't know if in the future we can do anything to avoid that. I don't know exactly when it was thrown, but if a car is passing at that time it can create unnecessary risk, so hopefully it won't happen again."
Talking about both racers, Verstappen registered a lap of 1m 10.342s in Q3, while Leclerc was just 0.021s off the home favorite in P2.
